It was a delight to attend the Good News Lutheran College Christmas Market recently. This was the community action part of a project undertaken by Year 5 learners this term. This is an excellent project where learners partner with Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS). The focus is to learn about effective international aid and how ALWS partners with overseas communities to provide people with the opportunity to develop small business ideas that will help lift them and their families out of poverty situations with dignity and a long term solution. The Year 5’s also learnt about social entrepreneurship by developing a small business idea to run a market stall to raise funds to support that important and ongoing work of ALWS.
It was wonderful to experience the buzz in the air as the College community came together to purchase Christmas crafts and gifts knowing that all funds are contributing to Gift of Grace.
The What’s My Business? Project is a collaboration between ALWS and Lutheran Education. It is a project that can be run in any year level between 4-7 and can be adapted to suit any inquiry or design thinking based pedagogical approach. This is a project that runs across several of our LEVNT schools with much success, an excellent example of how we bring Free to Flourish to life by engaging learners in developing a compassionate response to people experiencing poverty through learning that is grounded in meaning and purpose with community focused action.
In 2025 we will be partnering with ALWS to facilitate a day with all schools running the What’s My Business? Project to share success, problem solve and update the program. Look out for those dates!
