Our students love this time of year when our beautiful deciduous trees cover the ground with a carpet of leaves! It is also a time where the students enjoy building cubbies in the boundary tree lines and create amazing spaces to play.
Eureka! Our senior students have just participated in a unique two day, fully immersive, costumed school experience at Sovereign Hill. As part of the program, they attended the St Alipius school and experienced firsthand what school was like in the 1850s. The program links in with our school curriculum as the students are learning about early Australian History in class. The students also enjoyed other activities including laser tag and the AURA sound and light show at Sovereign Hill. The students also dined at restaurants for their lunch and evening meals and cooked a big breakfast in the park one morning. It certainly is an experience that they will always remember.
One of our students in Year 4 has very generously donated her hair so that it can be made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to a medical condition. Ruby chopped her hair and donated to Variety’s Hair with Heart. The SRC organized a crazy hair day and casual clothes day to support Ruby and she has already raised $3,436 and is still counting!
Portland is renowned for its unique and beautiful floral tribute to those who have given their lives in war, and to those left behind. For over 80 years, volunteers have worked tirelessly to create an amazing display for the ANZAC Day service. This year, the community made over 500 wreaths and all the flowers were grown in the Portland Botanical garden or private gardens. We also grew dahlias and foliage in our school garden. We had a group of students from Years 5/6 make wreaths at the Civic Hall and our school leaders laid a wreath on behalf of our school. It was very special to be part of this community event.
