September Update from Leon Furze
Leon Furze continues to work hard to synthesize the vast amount of information that is available about Generative AI and its implications for education in the Australian context through his informative articles published on his blog available at www.leonfurze.com
In this latest article he looks at the major advancements over the 6 months since publishing his book and looks at what is likely to come over the AI horizon in the coming 12 months.
We have an opportunity for schools to work as a collaborative and cross regional group with Leon Furze during 2025. Leon will guide school leaders through the challenge of developing guidelines for use of AI for both staff and students as well as taking measures to ensure that you have robust criteria for assessment to avoid some of the risks of AI overuse. Leon’s approach tends to sit in the realm of curious scepticism as he implores educators he works with to embrace Generative AI fully with careful discernment about the when, what and how.
The program we are offering will be a 12 month project with a number of online/hybrid connections with Leon to guide the practical implementation work that you will undertake in your school. Please see details below and get involved if this seems right for your school.
The Near Future of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Education: September 2024 Update
Collaborative Program for AI integration in Lutheran Schools
We are seeking expressions of interest for schools to join this program for 2025. If you are interested in being involved please contact me by Fri 1st November.
About the Program
This program proposal represents a collaborative effort among Leon Furze, LEQ, LEVNT and Lutheran Schools aiming to integrate AI into schools safely and to explore learning with AI, including the interplay between learning and assessment.
Set to commence in Term 4, 2024, and culminating in a showcase in Term 4, 2025, this initiative targets five-seven Lutheran Education schools, with participation from three to five staff members from each.
Central to the program is the exploration of how AI can support learning design—enhancing teacher planning and reducing workload—by aiding rather than replacing the educational process. Through this approach, AI will be leveraged to support curriculum development and learning design, while drawing on the expertise and pedagogical insights of teachers.
Who should participate?
- Teaching Staff
- eLearning Specialist
- Director of Teaching and Learning
Who will facilitate the program?

Quality assurance processes.
As part of this collaboration, all schools and stakeholders will need to adopt and consider the following:
- Assist and support teachers in implementing quality assessment and promoting assessment literacy.
- Agree on appropriate year levels/ bands targeted for the collaboration.
Accessibility.
There will be no minimum technical or resourcing requirements for schools to participate to ensure equity and accessibility. The collaboration will not be dependent on specific platforms and software.
What are the costs?
- Total Cost per School: $3200
- A $1000 per school deposit is required when booking. Remainder due in Term 1, 2025
- Includes all face-to-face and virtual sessions, catering, consulting fees, and resources.
