Mitch Tambo Tour
Recently, we enjoyed a wonderful incursion with First Nations International Artist, Mitch Tambo. Mitch is a renowned artist who has achieved recognition in Australia and across the World. As part of our cultural awareness and inclusion, our students had the opportunity to sing and dance along to Mitch’s music, and to learn some of his language and culture. Mitch also shared stories of how he has dealt with tough times in his life and used music to support his own wellbeing. It was a treat to have him perform at TLS and share his culture with us as a part of his Walanbaa Youth Tour.
Honourable Dan Tehan Visits TLS
On Monday morning earlier this term, we were privileged to welcome the Honourable Dan Tehan, our local Member of Parliament. Having had our two additional flag poles recently installed, Mr Tehan, joined us at our Anthem Ceremony to present us with our new Indigenous flag and to speak to us about both our National and Indigenous flags. The students enjoyed chatting with him and sharing stories about their weekends. He would have certainly walked away with some interesting insights and a strong sense of our community!
Sport
The many and various sporting events and carnivals are always highlights for us. Our sense of "community" is very apparent at such events. An amazing 18 records were broken on our Athletics Day last term. This term we have run our own Cross Country, as well as hosted the interschool Cross Country.
We congratulate our PE teacher, Mel Robertson, for her outstanding organisation in running all events and preparing students for events. We thank all staff and parent volunteers for the many individual and collective contributions that have been the strength of our success.
Walk Safely to School Day
Early on a crisp Autumn morning, TLS staff gathered for a brisk walk down to the Thompson Rd bus shelter to meet our students and walk with them back to school. It was a lovely way to begin a morning with our students, as well as open conversations regarding key road safety messages.
ANZAC Day Observances
On ANZAC Day 25 April, TLS students, staff and families gathered with the wider local community to participate in the Hamilton ANZAC march and services. It was touching to experience the large community turnout of local people at the ANZAC Day events from different backgrounds, faiths, cultures and generations. The morning before ANZAC Day, our School Captains and staff led us in a very moving early observance for ANZAC Day onsite at our own flagpole. Students from each class were given an opportunity to commemorate, reflect, give thanks and lay tributes in honour of all those who have served and sacrificed for us. It was very special to have one of our parents, returned serviceman James Papworth, participate in our ceremony. As a school community, we are forever grateful to the men and women who have sacrificed so much that we may live freely and in peace.
