What a wonderful God we have . . . who so wonderfully comforts and strengthens us . . .
— 2 Corinthians 1:3,4
As with many of us in our sixth decade, our parents are starting to age and inevitably, pass from this life. Last week we had the celebration of life (funeral!) for my father-in-law who had reached the grand old age of 90, and had been in a home the last year with dementia, which sadly affects so many of our older generation.
My amazing wife Sandy spent the last hours with Jim, and while this was very difficult to see someone you love pass away, I am sure on some level he knew she was there during his final moments. I often wonder why we ‘do death’ so poorly in the western world, and I’m not referring to those tragic circumstances when someone is taken early, but for those who have lived a long and fruitful life, we have something to celebrate and thank our God for His providence.
As Christians, we know that our Father God wraps us in His loving arms throughout our lives, and then welcomes us to our heavenly home. This is something to be celebrated, and despite the sadness that is present for us that live on, there is a joy in the memories and legacies that our loved ones leave behind. When we give space to grief, it becomes the doorway to deeper fellowship with Him, an invitation into a most holy place saturated with His love, peace and compassion.
For all in our communities who may be grieving, I wish God’s richest blessings for you and your families, as you travel this difficult road, knowing that His love knows no bounds.
In Christ,
